Communication 11

“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.”― Anthony Robbins

Introduction
Effective communication is a vital component in a learning environment, whether you are speaking with colleagues, your students, or others within day-to-day interactions. Part of the communication process that I give great care to is whether I am the receiver of information or I am delivering a message. I strive to be considerate of the person(s) I converse with. I communicate with learners of all ages, at their levels, in various ways including written, oral, email, text messages, audio/voice messages and hand-written letters. In addition, I seek to be mindful of when to have my cell phone or tablet open during conversations, whether they are professional or personal because for me, I want the person(s) that I am engaged in communications with to know that I am 100% focused on them and I am actively listening to them throughout the dialogue. I also let others know when there is a need to capture notes during the conversation, that I am doing so. I let them know that I am paying attention, even though I may occasionally look away while writing.

Reflection
Currently, I engage in educational technology academic communications with fellow colleagues. And I occasionally interact with students, I use Microsoft Teams, WebEx Messaging, Google Hangouts, as well as other district-supported communication software. I am mindful to share my input and/or feedback with others throughout our communication. It is important to maintain an open line-on-communications with those you work, live, and learn with. Yet, it may startle you to know that I am human. When I miscommunicate, I follow up to clarify and if appropriate, apologize.

Introduction
I was in a year-long (2014-2015) leadership program called, CLARA (The Consortium Leadership And Renewal Academy), which focuses on regional leadership information, development, and renewal program created for the member institutions of the North Texas Community College Consortium (NTCCC). During this program, we had monthly face-to-face day-long meetings/conferences each month at a different college within the NTCCC, complete an individual leadership project, as well as present a group project with fellow program classmates who were assigned to specific groups. The series of presentations (4 total combine into one large presentation) below includes the technology-rich resource-filled presentation that our assigned group presented publicly to everyone in our current class one of the community college districts within our NTCCC. There were five of us in my group, and each of us was from a different NTCCC college. We had one year to design, create, obtain technology resources as well as plan, prepare, and then on assigned date within that one year, present to our cohorts. The topic/chapter of the Leadership Challenge book, that we were assigned to present on was Chapter 8, Embracing the Concept of a "Team." The following attached links are the final 4 part, presentation.

Establish Common Goals (CLARA Team 7 Presentation-#2)

Encourage Reciprocity (CLARA Team 7 Presentation-#3)

Reflection
Overall, this leadership program has been beneficial in furthering my career opportunities as well as maintaining current skills and knowledge as well as those newly learned knowledge and skills that we learned from the activities, projects, collaboration with cohorts, and other useful and positive outcomes that are listed on my resume page of this portfolio. I am glad that I went through and completed this program in addition to all of the new friends, colleagues and other working relationships that this program fostered. I look forward to adding to my newly learned leadership and technology skills moving forward.

The above recent audio/voice communication was my mother's obituary that I wrote and presented to others during her funeral about six months ago. This was very difficult for me to do, but I know that she chose me to take care of this life wide and circle-of-life experience for her for a reason. I am blessed to have her as my mother as well as my four siblings (who gave me a shoulder to lean on often), who were there to support mom and me throughout this end-of-life process.
